About the Contest

Much like our annual WHERE Challenge, WHERE Challenge Mini is designed to inspire youth to discover the non-renewable resources that are used to make the items we use every day. Each individual contest is a condensed version of the larger WHERE Challenge for those who are unable to enter the main contest.

May Contest

We all know the importance of eating your fruits and veggies so that we can grow big and strong, but do we know what our fruits and veggies need to eat? Soil, sunlight, nutrients, climate and water are all extremely important factors in the successful growth of crops. If you have a garden at home, you might know about plant food, like fertilizers, that are full of nutrients and help our plants grow nice and tall. Next time you eat some veggies, or you go out into your own garden, Mining Matters is asking you to consider what components these plants need to grow and where they grow best. Good luck and happy gardening!

The Challenge: Plants require 3 main nutrients to be healthy: nitrogen, phosphorus, and potassium. These 3 nutrients are the main ingredients in plant fertilizers, but where do we get these ingredients? Write a short paragraph about one of the 3 nutrients and tell us what mined material we get it from and where in the world that material is mined.

BONUS Entry: Do some research online about the different types of soil and tell us which type would be best for vegetable crops to grow in and why?

How to Enter:
1. Use the top of the registration form to submit your entry (and bonus)! Additional entries can be submitted through submitting the form again or emailed to info@miningmatters.ca, please use the subject line: WHERE Challenge Mini. Please ensure your name AND your parent’s name are included in the email so we can properly allocate your additional entries.
2. Complete the registration form. Parental/legal guardian consent is required.

*Once you have registered, you can submit as many answers as you would like. Each unique set of answers will get you an extra entry into the draw*.

Deadline to enter: May 20 at 11:59 PM ET. A winner will be selected by random draw and will be sent an email.

Prize: Winners will receive a Mining Matters Prize Pack full of geology-themed activities!
